I was checking out my raspberry patch this morning when I noticed a small spider sunbathing.
Of course, zoomed in he looks like a ferocious monster! This is a ground spider, likely a Sergiolus montanus (possibly columbianus). Thanks to Sean McCann for help with the ID. The smile on his abdomen (the rear segment) is a trademark of the species. Ground spiders like this one don’t weave webs. Instead, they are so fast they just chase down their prey. Hopefully he is eating some insects that want to steal my raspberries.
