I was mowing my backyard lawn when I noticed something moving next to the lawnmower. It looked like a moth.
A big moth. It seemed to come up from out of the grass, so I wondered whether it had possibly just emerged from a cocoon underground.
See the chopped blade of grass on its back? It was a close call. I believe that this was a Large Yellow Underwing after looking at BugGuide and Field Guide to Insects and Spiders of North America by Arthur V. Evans. It is a species from Europe. The adults just drink nectar, but the larvae (also called cutworms) munch on plants.
