New Plant Brings New Crane Fly

Yesterday morning I went outside to keep planting my new rain garden.  As I glanced at this Streambank Violet, I noticed something large sitting on it.

It’s a Crane Fly, and is the first one I’ve seen this year.  Crane Flies are large.  They resemble mosquitos but don’t have the sharp mouth piece for feeding.  This is because most adult Crane Flies don’t eat.

I’ve never noticed one with these bold black and yellow colors before.  I had to take a second look just to make sure it wasn’t a wasp of some sort.

My camera didn’t seem to bother it much.  But a few minutes later when I removed the container to plant it, it flew away.
