Walnut Life with Woodpecker

Birds are always sitting near the top of our Walnut Tree.  Sometimes I’m not sure what they are until I look at my blown up photos afterwards.  This one, though, was obvious.

I saw it pecking away at my neighbor’s tree so it was obviously a woodpecker.  Also, it was very small which meant that it had to be a Downy Woodpecker.  Hairy Woodpeckers look very similar but are much bigger.

Below is a video I shot of this bird on my neighbor’s tree.  Listen for the tap-tap-tap sound.

  1. We don’t have any woodpeckers here in Australia although we do have birds that dig or enlarge holes in trees for nests. I like the video and the associated sounds.

  2. Digital cameras are great for bird id. We’ve pleanty of Acorn Woodpeckers but no Downy Woodpeckers, at least not that I have seen.

I’m fortunate that I don’t have to go anywhere to find the kite, he lives in the neighborhood. This was the first time he has perched so close to the path.
