Nuthatch Sticks Around

The nuthatch is back.  Every time we refill the bird feeder, the nuthatches, chickadees, and Steller’s Jays return.  As I posted about before, the nuthatch takes a seed, flies to a nearby tree, and breaks the seed against a tree trunk.

According to Birds of the Willamette Valley Region by Harry Nehls, Tom Aversa, and Hal Opperman, Red-breasted Nuthatches are more common in our area this time of year as they migrate from the mountains.  They are also regulars at bird feeders, so I will make sure to keep it stocked throughout the winter.
