Long-jawed Orb Weaver Enjoying the Sun

This is a Long-jawed Orb Weaver living in a maple tree in my backyard.  Its 8 eyes all seem to be staring back at me.

These spiders are named for their extra long jaws- see them sticking out of the head (or cephalothorax)?  Click on the photo for a better look.

The spider spins a horizontal web where it sits and waits.  When an unlucky insect gets caught by the sticky web, the spider pounces and prepares for a meal.
