My neighbor got a little nervous this week when he found tons of bugs crawling around the insides of his house shingles.
Luckily, they were only Boxelder Bugs. These insects are harmless, although they do sometimes swarm together in houses during the winter to keep warm. Then, when the sun shines, they come out to soak up the rays. Who can blame them?
Since the weather has turned foul again, they’ve probably gone back into their hiding places to wait it out.

THAT is kind of creepy
Lucky they are harmless.
Not sure I want them though. We have already enough creepy crawlies.
Cool shots though
Great macros of an attractive bug. Love the geometric patterns. Mass infestations can range from creepy to a big nuisance, depending upon the insect. We don’t have box elder bugs, but do sometime have multi-colored Asian ladybug outbreaks. When they are in, on and around everything, it’s a pain.
They’re quite pretty, in a weird sorf of way
My parents’ house outside of Salem used to get swarmed every year. We think it had something to do with the giant fir tree at one corner, but I don’t know. They would inevitably get in, flying all over the house.
Weird… that comment didn’t have my whole name.
I lived in an old farmhouse in Estacada for about a year and to say that it had a box edler bug ‘infestation’ was MILD! There were hundreds of these bugs every day! I can say from experience — they were persistent and bulletproof!
I finally got a small handheld vacuum, sucked them up, and dumped them outside! Most of the bugs were probably back in the house within an hour! HA!
